New Moon in Aries
Marking the start of the astrological new year, the New Moon is in the fiery sign of Aries.
As the first sign of the Zodiac - the start of the astrological year - Aries is a rebirth, a coming back to ourselves as the earth around us is also coming back into bloom. We’ve traversed the entirety of the Zodiac, learned what we needed to learn, tapped into the Universe’s wisdom in Pisces, and now we’re bringing it back into our bodies, back into our authentic selves.
I like to think of Aries as both the small child within us and the wise leader. Our Inner Child holds the core of who we are - all the things we loved, that brought us undiluted joy, all the energy we embodied as a kid, and the carefree, uninhibited way we were just purely ourselves. The Leader is the person who has learned, grown and is ready to lead an army into a battle for the greatest good. What do you want to champion? What are your core values that spark you to fight for what is right?
Direct and a little naïve, Aries speaks without filter or hesitation, which may chafe sensitive types, but it comes from a place of genuine care and wanting to help you be the truest you, as in this Dr. Seuss quote: “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you.” Not everyone is going to like what you do or have to say, and that’s okay. (More on that here.) Dr. Seuss has another quote for that: “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” Aries is here to bring out your youest you, no matter what anyone else thinks.
“Fearless” is a word often used to describe Aries, but I’m not a fan of this word or the pedestal we place it upon. We don’t want to strive to be fearless - having fear keeps us safe from walking off ledges or into traffic. Aries is instead courageous - that is, he is able to face and master his fears in order to bravely charge onward as a Ram does. Don’t try to get in a Ram’s way when he’s on a mission because he’ll just plow through you with those giant curled horns. And, I don’t know about you, but I could use some of that confident, take-no-shit, get-out-of-my-way-or-I’ll-push-you-out-of-my-way energy. Don’t let others hold you back from being the truest expression of yourself - and don’t get in your own way either.
The New Moon or Dark Moon occurs when the moon is positioned exactly between the sun and the earth, invisible to us because it is positioned directly in front of the sun. For this reason, the New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun. New Moons offer a blank slate, a new beginning as the moon begins to grow again, a death initiating a new cycle of birth. As Sarah Faith Gottesdiener says in The Moon Book, “darkness is where germination takes place.” It’s where seeds that we’ve planted begin to take root and grow. This is why New Moons are a time when we set intentions and plant the seeds of plans we will act upon in the coming days and weeks.
As this New Moon is just one day after the Spring Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, this is the perfect time to get yourself into balance - mind, body, and soul - and plant the seeds for new birth. Aries as a cardinal (the initiator) fire sign is here to light a fire under your butt to get creative and put things in motion. Is there a project you’ve been holding off starting because you didn’t think you were ready, or good enough or [insert your fear here] enough? Aries encourages us to awaken the dormant desires and potentials within us, bring them to the surface and START. Don’t wait for someone else’s permission, don’t wait for everything to be perfect… just begin.
There are a lot of heavenly bodies in Aries right now - the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Chiron - so the time for action that is firmly rooted in, and a true expression of, ourselves, is here. And we’ll have another New Moon in Aries on April 20th during a Solar Eclipse, so there’s definitely some potent Aries energy to get you motivated and taking action over the next month!

See which house Aries falls in within your birth chart, and create your own self-care rituals around this aspect of your life.
*Take a look at where Aries falls in your birth chart. If you don’t have one, you can create a free one at astro.com or astro-charts.com. It’s best if you know your exact birth time and location to create the most accurate chart based on your rising (aka “ascendant”) sign - the sign that was on the horizon at the moment of your birth - which changes every two hours. A birth chart based on your rising sign is much more specific to you, and will show you which planets and signs are in which houses. Look to which house Aries is in and try to show some love to those aspects of your life. For example, as a Scorpio Rising, Aries rules over my 6th house, the House of Service, Health, Routines, and Values. Some good self-care rituals for me would be getting into an exercise routine or donating/volunteering with charities that align with my values - both ideas I shared above.
Take care, moonbeams ~
