New Moon in Pisces

This New Moon is in the watery, dreamy sign of Pisces.

Pisces is the dreamer, the mystic, the sensitive, intuitive Old Soul. Luna Lovegood, to me, is the embodiment of Piscean energy - kinda spacey, a believer in the unexplainable, but always able to understand others and willing to go with the flow. Pisces is perhaps painfully empathic, easily picking up on the energy of others. It’s important for natives of this sign to surround themselves with positive people, define (and stick to) clear boundaries, and keep away from those who are overly critical and negative. However, this also makes Pisces the most compassionate sign, able to empathize, understand, and forgive better than anyone else.

Represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions, Pisces finds herself with one foot in each world - the “real,” physical world and the realm of spirit (which, who’s to say is any less “real” than our physical world?). This makes Pisceans able to easily tap into their dreams and creativity, though they may struggle to bring their ideas into form. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of imagination, creativity, dreams, illusions and mystery. As the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces helps us move out of our physical body and tap into our spiritual self, intuition, and higher consciousness. One of my best friends is a Pisces-Sun and I always feel so much more connected to spirit when I’m around her, and when we practice magick together. Whenever I doubt that I have a divine connection to the Universe, she helps me believe again. So if you’re struggling in this area, seek out a Pisces to help you. Ancient astrologers referred to this sign as “the sign of sorrow and self-undoing,” owing to the Pisces flaw of becoming wrapped up in grief and sorrow, wallowing in self-pity, and feeling their feels and fleeing what they don’t want to deal with, which is okay occasionally, but we can’t get stuck there. As an extreme example of this darker aspect of the sign, Kurt Cobain had five planets in Pisces including his Sun and Chiron, the “wounded healer” or place in our chart where we have the deepest wounds we must work to heal during this lifetime.

The New Moon or Dark Moon occurs when the moon is positioned exactly between the sun and the earth, invisible to us because it is positioned directly in front of the sun. For this reason, the New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun. New Moons offer a blank slate, a new beginning as the moon begins to grow again, a death initiating a new cycle of birth. As Sarah Faith Gottesdiener says in The Moon Book (which my Pisces-Sun friend bought me!), “darkness is where germination takes place.” It’s where seeds that we’ve planted begin to take root and grow. This is why New Moons are a time when we set intentions and plant the seeds of plans we will act upon in the coming days and weeks.

The Pisces New Moon is a time for dreaming, for slowing down, and initiating a journey within, to our soul, to our spiritual body, and exploring our connection to the Universe. When is the last time you got quiet, closed your eyes, and just let your mind wander, seeing where it leads you for 20, 30, 40 minutes? What do you see? What are your dreams telling you?

There are a lot of planets in Pisces right now - the Sun, Moon, Venus, Neptune, and soon Saturn. As my friend, Astrological Counselor Laura Watkins (whose emails are amazing if you’re at all interested in astrology - I’ve learned so much from her!) told me last week, you might experience crazy dreams, lots of emotions, and it may be hard to keep grounded and feel motivated right now. But that’s okay. This is when we rest, dream, seek answers within, think creatively and ideate. The time for action will come in a few weeks when we move into fiery, initiating Aries season. For now, dream. Be creative. Focus on creating for fun and pleasure, not accomplishment.

Pisces New Moon Affirmations:

  • I am a compassionate, caring being.

  • I can be compassionate towards others without letting their emotions define me.

  • The Universe speaks to me, and I listen.

  • Anything I dream can come true.

Pisces New Moon Self-Care Rituals:

  • Take a bath or foot bath. Put fun things into it - a few drops of essential oil, flowers, maybe a salt soak or coconut milk bath. Pisces is a water sign, so any watery self-care rituals like a bath, long shower, facial steam, etc. are great under this New Moon.

  • Start a dream journal. Pay attention to symbols or things that keep recurring in your dreams.

  • Meditate for a long period of time - 20 minutes or more.

  • Be creative. Create something just for the pure pleasure of it, not to accomplish anything. Draw, paint, color something, bake something, mix up a fun cocktail, mocktail, or herbal tea. Whatever sparks your creativity and joy.

  • Practice divination. Use tarot cards, fire gazing, tea leaf reading, runes, or a crystal ball or pendulum… whatever method calls to you.

  • See which house Pisces falls in within your birth chart, and create your own self-care rituals around this aspect of your life.

*Take a look at where Pisces falls in your birth chart. If you don’t have one, you can create a free one at astro.com or astro-charts.com. It’s best if you know your exact birth time and location to create the most accurate chart based on your rising (aka “ascendant”) sign - the sign that was on the horizon at the moment of your birth - which changes every two hours. A birth chart based on your rising sign is much more specific to you, and will show you which planets and signs are in which houses. Look to which house Pisces is in and try to show some love to those aspects of your life. For example, as a Scorpio Rising, Pisces rules over my 5th house, the House of Creativity, Pleasure, Children or Inner Child, and Passions. A pretty good house for Pisces to be ruling, actually! Some good self-care rituals for me would be doing anything creative like I’ve listed above or anything that feels like childlike play and wonder, tapping into my inner child.

Take care, moonbeams ~
