How (And Why) To Reuse & Recycle Your Content

I’m a big fan of recycling as much as I can - bottles, cardboard boxes, clothing, even content. When I say “content” I mean any video, post, email, photo you create for your business. Recycle, upcycle, and reuse it. Put it on multiple platforms multiple times.

I was having a conversation with a fellow female entrepreneur this morning who was struggling to come up with new content ideas. I shared a few suggestions (I am weirdly good at coming up with content ideas for people) and a few were things she's already done. "Reuse it!" I said. "People don't remember what you posted more than two days ago. If what you shared is more than a month or so old, share it again."

I mean, I barely remember what I ate yesterday, let alone the emails I received or Instagram posts I may have casually interacted with - unless they were adorable animals sent to me by my husband or sister-in-law. I tend to remember those. 😍 But I think, as business owners, we forget that the attention span of our ideal customers/clients is fairly short. If they saw a post or video or photo from you two months ago - and that's a big IF because #algorithms - they very likely won't remember it if you post it again. And if they subscribe to your emails and don't follow you on Instagram but you only shared the content on Instagram, they missed it altogether.

How to re-use your content:

  • Look back at your content (videos, photos, blog/social posts, emails) from the past few months or even years.

  • Note which content performed well, or could perform well if given another chance, or you could do in a different way.

  • Re-share that content and put it on multiple platforms. Share it on Insta *and* as an email *and* as a blog post, whatever's appropriate. Just like I'm doing with this post!

  • Tailor the content to the platform you're sharing it in. Ex: Don't put hashtags on Facebook or your blog, but use them on Instagram and LinkedIn.
