Not Everyone is Going to Like You, and That’s Okay.
You know how to tell you’re doing something right? When some people don’t like you. When you show up and are 100% authentically you, some people aren’t going to be able to handle that — and that’s on them.
A really well-defined brand — whether it’s a personal brand or your business — should both attract AND repel people, clients, and customers. If your dream client or customer is a rad female artist, maker, or entrepreneur who loves tea and 90s teen dramas as much as you do, then talk about your love of tea and 90s teen dramas so she can find you and you can be a match made in entrepreneur heaven. Don’t say “yes” to the stuffy, suit-wearing middle-aged guy who balks at your pink hair and will ultimately turn out to be a nightmare client (true story).
Stand up, be weird, and be proud of your weirdness. And if you’re feeling scared and vulnerable and judged, make a list of five — ONLY FIVE — people who truly care about you, embrace every aspect of you, and want to see you succeed. (You can thank the brilliant Brené Brown for this exercise.) Keep that list on you everywhere you go. Did someone make fun of your hair? Doubt your abilities? Tell you you shouldn’t talk about witchy/woo~woo stuff if you want to be “taken seriously”? Is that person’s name on your list? No? Then let their opinion go ~ it doesn’t matter. (And, yes, sometimes that means the jabbing things some of your “friends” or family members say don’t matter. If they don’t support you, they shouldn’t be on that list.)
When you are truly being YOU ~ your wonderful, talented, super rad self ~ you will attract similarly cool people, friends, clients and customers. Promise.
